Joyce Chung (she/her)
Legal Aid BC
Advocate-Paralegal
Vancouver
As a second-generation, cis-gender, Korean Canadian woman, I am humbly grateful to be able to live and work on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations as the Vancouver Parents Legal Centre’s (“PLC”) Advocate-Paralegal. I have been working at Legal Aid BC’s Vancouver PLC since 2016 and I am highly thankful to be able to work towards a cause that I whole heartedly believe in. My interest in working in the social justice arena as an advocate began when a mentor planted the social justice seed when I was labelled by the school system as an “at-risk youth” and it blossomed during my time as an Information Coordinator and Legal Assistant for the BC Human Rights Clinic between 2006 to 2016. My current role involves supporting our clients in their child protection case by accompanying them to their meetings with the Ministry of Children and Family Development and with Vancouver Aboriginal Child and Family Services Society. I support our clients by connecting them to resources in the community that may assist them in resolving their child protection case and provide advocacy in areas related to counselling, parent-related programs, treatment, housing and tenancy issues, as well as navigating various avenues such as replacing missing identification or forming a complaint with public services. I hope to gain more insight into other service providers in the community and I welcome listening and learning from the wisdom of like-minded folks. On my spare time I enjoy caring for my three cats, two rabbits and Mini Aussie puppy with my husband as well as cooking, gardening, painting and camping!
