There’s so much expected of you when you serve the community.
As legal advocates you work with people who often express big emotions and can sometimes behave unpredictably. You may find yourself on heightened alert as you repeatedly face others’ distress and not-infrequent anger. If you do administrative work, you might transcribe difficult information, see disturbing photos and talk with people who are struggling. Your role can be hampered by situations beyond your control. Your work and the people you serve matters to you.
Stress lands in our bodies and can unplug the brain. Our bodies respond instinctively under pressure: the neck or jaw tightness; the stomach gets queasy. Our thinking can then become less clear. Regular exposure to taxing situations can leave us with chronic health conditions: irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, etc… and exhausted.
Physical discomfort requires physical strategies. This introductory workshop offers simple techniques you can practice to get you and your body working together. You will learn tools to help you in these situations so that you can think clearly and bounce back to being yourself. My hope is that you leave the workshop with renewed energy having practiced techniques you can implement when you most need them.
Learning objectives:
- Describe how our nervous system automatically responds to challenges or stressors
- Experience tuning in to automatic instinctive cues at an earlier stage of feeling uneasy
- Practice a variety of effortless tools you can use during challenging moments to help you think clearly and feel better.
What to expect from Shayna’s training:
- An interactive combination of instruction, reflective dialogue and lots of practice
- Choices of ways to engage with the activities (that aren’t role plays)
- Hopefully new and interesting material as well as laughter despite the serious content
