During my time in the industry I served on the local executive for 36 years years with 25 years as local president. I also served as a general executive Board member for 35 years and 5 as the Northern Vice president of the union. I along with the bargaining committee negotiated collective agreements with the fishing companies and also fought the 1st free trade strike in Canada alongside my membership, we lost our season that year but won our battle to keep fish in Canada and we also won a Pension plan for the industry. I worked 3 years in the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital as maintenance and found my self doing advocacy work for my former members from the fishing industry as well as my maintenance job. Building this relationship with the staff at the hospital and within Northern Health has proven to be very valuable in my job with the Prince Rupert Unemployed Action Centre. Getting PWD, CPPD and other applications completed has been made so much easier with this relationship that has been developed over the 3 years i worked for Northern Health. I began work 3 years ago at PRUAC and have taking on the role as an Aboriginal advocate as well as a advocate, On a yearly average My co worker and myself serve between 500 to 700 clients each out of our office.
